Yesterday, we worked on Going into Contact (both offensively and tackling) and the rules relating to kicking. (We also did a bit of mauling, but I can't really explain that here... if you missed it, we'll go over it again at the next practice.) Check this out to recap and make sure you're up to date!
5th Rule of Rugby: Never Work The Whole Man (Or Woman).
This means that you never want to go directly into the defender. You want to "work" a shoulder by attacking (sort of like throwing a jab) with your palm (you are not allowed to punch them). The trick is to immediately pull back your arm after you've made contact so that the defender cannot grab your arm/hand and pull you down. We'll go over some other techniques at later practices.
The rules on kicking are a bit tricky in rugby. Basically, if you're behind the kicker when they kick it, run like crazy to get to the ball. If you're in front of the kicker when she kicks it, you've got some work to do before you can chase the ball. You can't go forward (and you must attempt to retreat) until either (a) the kicker or (b) someone who was behind the kicker when the kicker kicked it passes you.
